Endorsers for Escape from Appalachia —
This is an extraordinary book. The author writes her memoir with such clarity that it is easy to relate to the sadness, trauma, hopelessness and neglect of her early childhood. Those passages continue to haunt me. She weaves into the narrative a synopsis of the environmental mess that was a hallmark of the coal industry in the middle years of the last century. The filth, smog and refuse generated by “King” coal adds to her misery and depression and those of so many around her. Despite all of this, her inquisitive nature and intellect begin to emerge early. The joy she found in her newly immigrated neighbors helped to guide her through her school years and gave her a sense of community and caring support she didn’t have at home. Several of the tragedies that she describes are heart-wrenching and add to her feelings of helplessness in the face of her losses. But her resilience, innate curiosity, and intelligence begin to power her forward and out of her dismal situation as she begins her formal education. Her story resonates with me and I’m sure it will with others who read about her incredible journey out of poverty and neglect to the powerhouse she has become in her chosen fields. A fascinating read -- Well done, Francie!

Escape from Appalachia is a phenomenal memoir. It is funny, starkly revealing, and heartbreaking all at the same time. The author's voice brings a droll but sweet humorous viewpoint as she beautifully recounts her life in a poor, small Pennsylvania town that is short on hope and joy, where the inhabitants try to eke out an existence. The author's parents are well educated but entitled, refusing to work to support their family. In spite of an unbelievably tough childhood, Francie excapes the bitterness and complete defeat all around her with a resilience, kindness, positive attitude, and work ethic that not only pull her up, but also many around her. This is a book of joy not heaviness. Looking for a substantial book that is still a fun, relaxing read? Escape from Appalachia is that book! Get it and read it as fast as you can. You won't be sorry.

A book so beautifully written to tell a delicate story of a life few of us ever imagined. A story of the accepted poverty, neglect, and the deprivation of the Point Marion town in Appalachia because it was what it was. It starts through the eyes of a very young child with a bright mind and the cherished love from a few people to guide her into a life to live. I believe I have read a best seller.

Riveting and inspiring.

This is a book that makes you ponder life. What makes one person come out of childhood broken and stuck while another becomes wiry-tough, with strength and flexibility? Francie said she escaped Appalachia. I say no, Appalachia is still in her, making her more determined and resourceful. People choose how they respond to hardships—they get deeper and stronger or they give up. Francie exemplifies Romans 5:3 which paraphrased says this: “Troubles can develop patience which can develop character which can lead to vibrant expectancy and hope in what God will do. This in turn brings true freedom.
